FIVE GOLDEN BEAR GRAPPLERS MEDAL AT SECTIONALS - HEADED TO DISTRICTS
Sophomore Tim Santry was the runner-up at 112 lbs. Tim started off his tournament with a 2nd period pin over Pennsbury junior
Pat Hyland. He followed that up with a 13-0 blanking of Council Rock North senior Jake Vanderwyck. In the finals match, Tim dropped a
tough 6-4 decision to Truman's Sean Edmonson. Freshman Will Dill was quite impressive in his first post-season tournament.
Will entered the tournament in the 119 lb. weight class as the 7th seeded wrestler. His first match was against the
2nd seeded William Tennent senior Steve Schwartz, who had 23 wins on the season. Will handled the senior winning
by a 12-6 decision. After dropping a 14-6 major decision to Truman's Jay McQuaid, Will would go on to major
Council Rock South's Brian Hercus by a score of 15-6. In the consolation finals, Will won by decision over
Pennsbury's Matt Funk 6-3. Will went an impressive 3-1 for the tournament, beat three guys with 20 or more wins in the process,
and brought home the bronze medal! Junior Mark Poderis also brought home a bronze medal as he finished 3rd at 152 lbs.
Mark dropped a 10-6 opening match decision to William Tennents Ryan Alford. That dropped him to the bottom bracket
where he would have to win 3 matches in a row to take 3rd place and he did just that! After pinning the next two opponents,
Mark was out to get his revenge in the consolation finals as he would face Alford again, the same wrestler he lost to in the first round,
only this time Mark would come out on top as he defeated Alford 8-5 to take 3rd place. Another Golden Bear wrestler to bring
home the bronze was Sophomore 160 pounder, James Nicholson. James would win his first round match by a 16-5 major decision
over Rock South's Justin Chung. That would set up a semi-finals match with the tough Anthony Uhrik of Bensalem.
James wrestled well but dropped a 5-3 decision to the senior and eventual 160 lb. champion. The loss certainly did not
effect him as he went on to defeat Neshaminy's Pat Burns by a score of 9-2, then handled
Abington's Paul Berger in the consolation final 11-4 to take 3rd place.
Sophomore Dan Bolich finished 4th in the 145 lb. weight class. Dan dropped his first round match to Jason Levy of Abington 3-1.
But the young Golden Bear wrestler also showed great perseverance as he went on to defeat his next two opponents
to make it to the consolation finals. Congratulations to you all, and to the entire team on a very impressive showing!!!!!!
